Perhaps now more than ever, mindfulness is gaining recognition as a valuable tool to help us turn inward and stay centered. We love using art as a way to slow down and connect within. We hope you can find some added peace in your day with the help of a little creative expression too!

This video shows an easy mindful art exercise using basic Sumi supplies to help relax the mind and body. Inspired by artist Natasha Newton's YouTube video on mindful mark making using watercolors. We decided to try it with liquid sumi ink and rice paper and love the results!

Check out the tutorial here:

Items Used:

Turn on some relaxing music, and enjoy the process!

Steps

  1. Pour the ink into the saucer create several shades of black to grey in the round dish.
  2. Cut two sheets of paper in half so you have four sheets of paper. Place a towel or felt under the rice paper sheet, and paint on the smooth side.
  3. Start painting small raindrop shapes in random directions starting from the left side of the paper and going right until the paper is covered.
  4. Paint clouds on a new sheet. Vary the shades of black to grey in each cloud.
  5. Paint small sprouts. These can look like birds' feet too!
  6. Paint small leaves going in different directions on the paper. Once the papers are dry, detail, and doodle using a metallic gel ink pen.
